Volunteer your time!

Opportunities abound for volunteers at Glenoak.  Many choose to assist in our riding classes as either leaders or sidewalkers.  Sidewalkers need not have prior horse experience, and many of our leaders had no horse experience before volunteer training.  Experienced riders often apply to serve as backriders to assist those riders who cannot sit independently.  This assignment does require extensive experience and a qualifying test.  Each of these volunteers meet critical needs of our riders and enable them to reach new levels of independence.  These volunteers sign up for a specific class for a 10-week session.  Classes are scheduled in the morning, afternoon, after school, evenings and on weekends.

Sidewalkers:

  • responsible for grooming and tacking horses for their assigned class
  • assist rider during mounting as directed by instructor
  • assist rider during class time by walking beside the rider as needed
  • at the end of class, assist with dismount as directed by instructor
  • assist rider to waiting parent or guardian
  • return horse to stall, remove tack, assist with feed and water as instructed

Leaders:

  • responsible for grooming and tacking horses for their assigned class
  • remove horse from stall and take to mounting area
  • attend horse during mounting and dismounting procedure
  • lead horse as directed by instructor during class
  • return horse to stall, remove tack, assist with feed and water as instructed
